Education
Peter Cancro attended Point Pleasure Hugh School located in New Jersey. He was still a high school student when he bought Jersey Mike’s Subs.
He wanted to study Law at the University of North Carolina but the acquisition, running, and expansion of his business did not allow him further his education.
Career
At the age of 14, in 1956, Peter started working at Mike’s Subs. Then, he was still a high school student in Point Pleasant. Peter loved authentic submarine sandwiches and also loved working behind the counter and getting to know the customers.
In 1975 when Peter Cancro was just 17 years old, he overheard the owner of Mike’s Subs discussing selling the business, he was interested and even his mother suggested that he buy the business.
One week later, on a Sunday night at 9 pm, Peter visited Rod Smith, his youth football coach and also a banker, and declared his intention to buy the business. The business purchase price was $125,000 at the time which is equivalent to $700,000 to $800,000 today. Rod Smith loaned him the money and he eventually bought the business.
Peter later got married to his first wife and together with his wife, they spent the next decade expanding the business.
Customers would come from far away to get their subs wrapped to travel and Peter started considering the idea of franchising the business. In 1987, when he was 29 years old, he hired attorneys to set up his franchising business. He changed the name from Mike’s Subs to Jersey Mike’s Subs to capture the authenticity of the original store

In 1975, when Peter had already bought his first Sandwich store, he got married to Linda Cancro. Peter and Linda have two children together, a son named Robert Cancro and a daughter named Caroline Jones. Peter and Linda’s marriage lasted for a couple of decades but they eventually got divorced.
After his first marriage ended, Peter gave love & marriage another try and got married to his second wife, Tatiana Voevodina Cancro in February 2014.
His wife, Tatiana was born on the 17th of March 1971. She was just 3 years old when Peter married his first wife, Linda. Tatiana was once married before to another man and had a son for her first husband. Peter and Tatiana have no child together.
