Daniel Olugbenga Aluko was a Nigerian politician and former senator. He was born on the 20th of July, 1963 to the family of Mr. Sam Aluko (prominent Nigerian Economist from Ekiti State, Nigeria) and Mrs. Joyce Aluko.

He hailed from Ekiti and represented Ekiti South constituency in the Nigerian senate from the 29th of May, 1999 to 2003. He died on the 20th of November, 2021.


Gbenga Aluko is an alumnus of Federal Government College, Ilorin. In 1982, he obtained a degree in geography and regional planning from the University of Benin.

He also attended the College of Energy and Petroleum Studies, Oxford, England for a Post Graduate Course in International Oil Trading and Pricing.


Between 1983 and 1999, Gbenga Aluko worked n the oil and gas sector and held several positions. He held the position of the Managing Director/CEO of HYGYNIX, Executive Director of Baseline Petroleum and Chemicals, and Executive Chairman of Independent Strategists.

In 1993, he was appointed as the Special Assistant to the Minister of Transport and Aviation and General Manager of Nigeria Shipper’s Council and served from 1993 to 1995.

In 1999, he contested to represent Ekiti South in the upper chamber of the National Assembly under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and won the election and assumed office in 1999.

During his time in the Senate, he was the Deputy Chief Whip and a member of the Senate Committee on Services (vice-chairman), Aviation, Women Affairs, Finance and Appropriation, Social Development and Sports, and Local and Foreign Debts. He was also the Vice-Chairman of the Gas Committee and Chairman of the Petroleum Committee and he also served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate.

In October 2002, he became the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission after he was appointed to replace Oserheimen Osunbor.

Gbenga Aluko left the senate in 2003 and continued in private enterprise. He served as a Director of Crest Healthcare, served as Director of Government Affairs with Chevron Nigeria, he also was a consultant to DFID (Department of Internal Development) on Parliamentary Matters, and he also held a controlling interest in Alstegg and Midlands, a Civil Engineering Firm.

Gbenga Aluko decamped from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to Labour Party (LP) where he contested for the sit of the Governor of Ekiti State in 2007 and he lost the election. In 2009, he returned back to his previous party, PDP.

In 2018, Gbenga Aluko contested for the Ekiti state government under the Platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) but lost in the primaries to Governor Fayemi.


Aluko was involved in controversy when he was among those indicted by a panel chaired by Senator Idris Kuta that investigated financial improprieties by Senators.

In a report by the panel and a subsequent ad hoc committee chaired by Senator Victor Oyofo, it was discovered that Aluko had overcharged for repairs to senators’ quarters and overpriced computers and office equipment supplied to senate members, and recommended that he refund the excess.

However, in September 2002, the Senate adopted a motion proposed by Aluko that the senate should duly absolve all Senators indicted in both reports.

Personal Life

He was married to Sileola Aluko and their marriage was blessed with five children. Two of his children, Eniola Aluko and Sone Aluko are professional footballers.

Gbenga Aluko is a brother to Bolaji Aluko and they are christians.

He slumped and died in his office in Abuja on the 20th of November, 2021. He died at the age of 58.
