That day David drove me home in his car, he asked me to tell him all Mr Arinze did to me and why I wanted to quit my job. desperately.

I had explained everything to him not leaving one thing out, he was agape the whole time disbelieving all he heard.

I pleaded with him not to dismiss him because he was a great creative at the radio station and had overseen numerous successful shows before he took over but he was adamant.

He dropped me off in front of my house and I walked to the door all the while praying for my parents to not be in because I was not in the mood for questions especially from my father about the person that dropped me off.

I knocked at the door and when no one answered from within I sighed with relief, opened up my purse to take out my keys and let myself into the house.

From that day on, I dressed to work with a smile on my face and worked without my heart pounding in fear of the unknown.

Though I was scared of Mr Arinze attacking me outside or tailing me to know my home after months without crossing the path, I finally put my mind at ease.

My boss or rather David as he had implored me to call him by his first name had been driving me home from the day of the dismissal.

Soon he began to ask me to accompany him out to see the movies, restaurants and other places at weekends. He explained that he had no friends around to chill with and needed company, he said since I was available he had to ask me.

What he didn’t know was that I sometimes cancel other plans just to go out with him, I was getting used to him. He was kind, compassionate and almost perfect.

He always knew what to say and when to say it, he respected my opinions and listened when I speak about my Passion which is Art.

Some days he will ask me to show him my paintings and I would take pictures of them to show them to him, and he always praises them. He even bought one of them.

It was a painting of a woman who was breastfeeding her child and taking care of her other baby. He had said the picture reminds him of his deceased mother which was the reason he purchased it.

We were going out for many months and he never popped the dating question or said we are in any kind of relationship apart from the boss and worker relationship that existed already.

One day, as usual, he had invited me to lunch and he had said we might be having dinner as well after watching a movie.

I had arrived at the place in a taxi, I got out of the cab and paid my fare when I saw him standing beside his car in the parking lot. He waved at me and walked to meet me.

He took me by the hands and asked which restaurant I would like to eat at. I replied that I was hungry for Chicken and chips, he then nudged me towards Kentucky Fried Chicken popularly known as KFC.

We walked in, ordered the chicken and chips and we sat to eat our meal. While eating he told me that after movies he had a surprise for me, and It was because of this surprise he had not come to pick me at my house.

I was so anxious to know what the surprise was that I was so jumpy, I barely paid attention to the movie we were seeing at the cinema.

When the movie ended, I couldn’t contain my curiosity any longer, I began to pester him to tell me what the surprise was. He smiled at me and told me to get into the car.

We drove to a car company and he asked me to come down. I looked at the place and asked him what it is we are doing here, he told me to be calm.

He spoke to the man that came to welcome us and asked if what he asked was ready and he affirmed that it was.

David walked to me and said

“Are you ready for this?” He asked smiling shyly

“Ready for what?” I asked confused

He took my hands and we followed the man to the garage and he took the cover off the car, there was a ribbon on the car and a statement written boldly on the windscreen of the car

“Will you be my girlfriend?” Was indicated on it.

I turned to look at David disbelieving what I was looking at, I watched his face trying to discern if it was real or not.

Then he repeated what I had just read

“Will you be my girlfriend, Mary?”

“Oh my God” I muttered in disbelief and looked at the car again, tears rolling down my eyes

“Why are you crying, Mary?” He asked concerned

“I’m not crying” I replied unsteadily

He used his hands to clean the tears on my face and said confusedly

“But these are tears” he whispered

I giggled at what he said “They are happy tears, I am so happy”

“You are?” He exclaimed merrily and lifted me off the floor in a tight hug

“But you haven’t said Yes or No to my question” he muttered

“Of course, Yes, Yes and Yes again,” I said excitedly while he took me into his arms, kissed my forehead and hugged me tight to him. Read the next chapter (16) Here!
