Back in the days, success and breakthrough into the Nigerian music industry weren’t just dependent on your talent nor hard work but by middlemen like the Radio stations, televisions and record labels.
The emergence of the internet was a total game-changer for the music industry as these middlemen weren’t the only determinant of success in the music industry.
A lot of potentials have been discovered on the internet, these days many youngsters have decided to take the bull by the horn by capitalizing on the internet and making themselves a force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian music industry and now musicians aren’t just dependent on radio station alone for the promotion of their songs.
Here are some Nigerian artists that became popular through the internet.
Many have gone to auditions, talent shows and taken other measures to showcase their talent and secure a recording deal but all it took Terri was just a music cover.
The young lad made a video of himself singing the song ‘Oshe’ by DJ Jimmy Jatt featuring Wizkid and tagged a couple of celebrities. Wizkid saw the video and picked interest in him. Wizkid showed the video to Mut4y (Of Legendury Beatz) and told him to help him get the boy and that was how the life of Terri changed.
Right now he is the only person signed on paper to Starboy Entertainment.
Despite having a famous mother who is well known in the Yoruba movie industry, breaking into the music scene wasn’t an easy one for the talented singer as he resorted to working in the bank and making music during his free time.
After resigning from his job at the bank due to low pay, the singer recorded a cover of Davido’s single ‘The Money (feat. Olamide)’, posted it on Twitter and tagged Davido seeking for help. I’m sure that to date, Mayorkun considers that as one of the best decisions/actions he has taken as that video changed his life completely. The video caught the attention of Davido who got back to Mayorkun and gave him a recording deal with DMW (Davido Music Worldwide).
The talent of the Dr Dolor Entertainment songstress is one that is very apparent. While she was still in school in the United States, the songstress leveraged the Internet and created a fan base for herself already while still in school.
Her Instagram was really popping back then as she kept her followers engaged with her comic videos and her dope freestyles with her soul-satisfying voice.
She secured a recording deal with Dr. Dolor Entertainment and even before she got back to Nigeria, she already had a fan base for herself.
Only the day one fans of the Bahd Guys record boss – Falz can tell how he broke into the music industry.
The singer and rapper gained traction online via his comic videos with his hilarious Yoruba accent. His career took a different turn when he started releasing comedy videos online with the phrase Ello Bae and after he got the attention that he needed he started pushing his music to the new audience he acquired for himself.
Mavin records & Jonzing World recording artist, Divine Ikubor who is well known as Rema and ended up on the list of top ten best musicians for 2019 was also discovered on the internet.
The young lad decided to jump on D’Prince’s 2018 single ‘Gucci Gang’ and delivered a top-notch cover which he posted on Instagram. The video caught the attention of D’Prince who went on to introduce Rema to Don Jazzy and that got him signed into one of Nigeria’s biggest record labels, Mavin Records. (6) Yomi Blaze & Picazo Rhap
These ones decided to take the bull by the horn. They didn’t go the regular way of sliding into the DM’s of celebrity and begging for help. They came out on the street and murdered the instrumental for the single ‘Able God’ by Chinko Ekun (Feat. Zlatan & Lil Kesh) and the video was literally everywhere.
Majors Instagram blogs and some celebrity’s page posted the video but they didn’t even allow that get into their head as they released more freestyle videos in their hood. They finally found favor in the eyes of the YBNL boss – Olamide who put them on and gave them a platform at the YBNL. Even tho their relationship was short-lived, it is worthy to note that it put them on the map and how they choose to utilize the fame they have now is totally up to them.
