We got more than we bargained for in 2020 in terms of music release. Unlike in the previous years when fans beg their favorite singers to release new songs, this year we got not just a lot of singles but also albums, EPs, and music videos from them.
We had trendy/hit songs all year long from January to the last month of the year and shortlisting all these songs to the best ten wasn’t an easy task. In this post, we will be looking at the top ten Nigerian songs in 2020.
Top Ten Nigerian Songs Released in 2020
(1) Davido – Fem
After a long break from social media due to the lockdown and for a mental recharge, the DMW boss, Davido returned triumphantly with the single ‘Fem’, a lead single for his album ‘A Better Time’.
Due to the high level of anticipation, the song streams on YouTube did so well, so much that naysayers swore he manipulated his numbers but that was what was said about Mayorkun when he made his debut in 2016 with the song ‘Eleko’ and he has continued to prove his doubters wrong ever since then.
The song was integrated into the #ENDSARS protest nationwide and served as an anthem for the protest and a response to anyone speaking out of place or talking too much. FEM comfortably holds the position for the biggest song for 2020.
Tho regarded as a fraud song that promoted fraud, even the critics of the lyrics can’t resist the urge to lose their home training whenever the record comes on in the club or any party whatsoever.
Bella Shmurda, who started gaining traction in 2019 after his collaboration with Olamide on the remix of his single ‘Vision 2020’ and the release of his EP ‘High Tension’, came back stronger in 2020, featuring on Runtown’s single ‘Body Riddim’ and delivering one of the finest records of 2020 ‘Cash App’ featuring his friend and music colleague, Zlatan alongside Lincoln.
Speaking of the right time and resource, DJ Neptune had all that in play and to his advantage for the release of his single ‘Nobody’ featuring Joeboy & Mr Eazi. Even tho the song is a really great song, it also came in at a time when we were all at home, glued to our screens, and were ready to jump on to any trending challenge, hence giving the song an edge.
The song started gaining huge traction following the online challenge and started getting international entries after the heart-gladdening video by Sara Karrit. The song was produced by Magic Sticks while the music video was directed by TG Omori.
(4) Simi – Duduke
They say you will never truly understand mother’s love until you become one and that was evident in the life of the Studio Brat crooner, Simi, who couldn’t contain her excitement of beholding her daughter who she was pregnant with at the time and had to put her thoughts, words, and emotion into the song ‘Duduke’ which later turned out to become the biggest song of her career despite being released in an unprecedented time of our lives.
She talked about how she can’t wait to behold her daughter and describes how she makes her heart beat differently. The song triggered a challenge on TikTok which had so many video entries and was among the most-watched 2020 Nigerian music videos on YouTube.
The synergy between Davido and Mayorkun is one that only the deaf can deny. They have never failed to deliver any time they link up as we’ve seen on songs like ‘Betty Butter’, ‘Bobo’, ‘Prayer’, and the many times that they have been on a song together.
For the first time, Davido features Mayorkun on his own song and the song didn’t just meet our expectations, it exceeded them. Mayorkun started off on the song, eulogized Davido and how he learned from the very best ‘Davido’ and Davido came in later on the chorus on bodied the track. Everything about the record, from the vocals, instrumental, and delivery is just top-notch. The song has held down the number one position on ‘Top 100 Songs in Nigeria‘ on Apple music for weeks since its release, a position that it won’t be letting go of anytime soon.
After failing to bring back the Grammys last year with his album ‘African Giant’, the self-acclaimed African Giant returned stronger and better in 2020 with the album ‘Twice As Tall’ securing yet another Grammy nomination for the same category (name of the category was changed) and also held a spot on the Top Ten Nigerian albums of 2020.
Even tho there isn’t a single mediocre song on the project, one song steals the spotlight ‘Bank On It’, a self-reflective, reassuring, and prayerful record where the singer asks the Lord for guidance and protection as he can’t even trust his neighbors let alone total strangers.
Prior to the release of the song, the snippet had been all over the place, and knowing Wizkid’s personality & style, his fans didn’t really have high hopes for the release of the full song and just made due of the snippet at the time but surprisingly to the fans, the song was on the tracklist of the highly-anticipated Wizkid’s album ‘Made In Lagos’.
Having two of Nigeria’s biggest musicians, fans quickly checked out the song which explains why it is the most-streamed song on the album on various music streaming platforms and their expectation wasn’t cut short as the song lived up to the hype.
The African Bad Girl made it clear that she isn’t down for that Suffer Head lifestyle and is only available for enjoyment on this club essential song ‘Koroba’.
(9) Davido ft. Nicki Minaj – Holy Ground
Prior to the release of the album ‘A Better Time’, Davido had tipped his fans already that he has an unreleased record with ace American female rapper and singer, Nicki Minaj, that will be on the album and fans couldn’t wait till the album release date to listen to the song and eventually leaked the song before the album was released.
A record that is worthy to be called Davido’s biggest international collaboration and one of the most successful songs on the ‘A Better Time’ album.
(10) Patoranking – Abule
Last on the list is the hit-record ‘Abule’ by the Amari Musiq recording artist, Patoranking. On the Telz produced Afrobeat and pop song, Patoranking told us what went down in a party that was held in Abule (Abule Egba), a neighborhood in Lagos, Nigeria.
The song was on his third studio album ‘Three’ which was released this year, 2020.
