Johannes Strydom who is popularly known as Hans Strydom is a South African actor and producer. He was born on the 14th of May 1947 in Durban, Natal, South Africa. He is well known for his role in the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy and Binnelanders.

Hans attended North-West University and graduated from the institution but his major in the institution isn’t public knowledge. His burning desire to fight for the rights of Black South Africans and other marginalized groups took him back to school and he enrolled in Potchefstroom University where he obtained a degree in Law (LLB).

Career

Despite being well-known as an actor, that wasn’t his first career. Hans had a strong passion for the rights of Black South Africans and other marginalized groups and this led him to law.

He enrolled in Potchefstroom University where he obtained a degree in Law (LLB). In 1964, he applied for a job at the South African Department of Justice at the Durban Magistrate court and he also got the job, that was the beginning of his law career.

He worked there for 8 years until the year 1972 when he left and joined Ladysmith where he became a public prosecutor. Hans served as a public prosecutor until he resigned from practicing law in the year 1976.

At the age of 29, after resigning from being a public prosecutor, Hans got into acting and Hans became one of the first South Africans to appear on television. In 1976, Hans and David Hall-Green gave the country’s first national broadcast.

His display of talent at the national broadcast landed him roles in Television series like Binnelanders, Plek van die Vleisvreters, Westgate, and many others. Hans made his film debut in 1976 in the movie Someone Like You.

Hans career continue to skyrocket and he got roles in top South African films like Diamond and the Thief, Autumn Land, and the 1989 blockbuster The Gods Must Be Crazy II.

In 1986, Hans delved into film production and worked as an assistant director in the TV series Die Mannheim-Sage in which he also starred as an actor. He also worked in the sound department as the dubbing director in Die Mannheim-Sage.

In 2002, Hans Strydom sued the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) for not giving actor rewards and honors for rebroadcasting and television show reruns. Hans came out victorious in the case and SABC was duly fined by the court and payment was made to the actors. Hans became the people’s favorite with this act and he has since been at the forefront of ensuring that actors and artists receive the allocated fees from the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
