Sonali Phogat was an Indian actress and politician. She was born on the 21st of September 1979 in Bhuthan Kalan village, Fatehabad, Haryana, and died on the 22nd of August 2022 in Goa.

Sonali belonged to a Jaat family. Sonali’s father was a farmer. She had four siblings, a brother and three sisters, and one of her sisters’ name is Sudesh Phogat.

Education

Sonia was a student of Pioneer Convent School, Fatehabad, Haryana, and she obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Maharshi Dayanand University, Haryana.

Career

Film/Television

In 2006, she made her television debut as an anchor in a Haryanvi show on Doordarshan. She starred in the web series “The Story of Badmashgarh” in 2019 and in the same year, she also featured in the music video of the Haryanvi song “Bandook Aali Jaatni”.

In 2020, she played the role of the wife of Nawab Shah in the TV Serial “Amma: Ek Maa Jo Laakhon Ke Liye Bani Amma”. In the same year, she entered the reality TV show “Bigg Boss 14” as a wild card contestant.

Political Career

In 2008, she joined Bharatiya Janata Party and she later became the National Vice President of BJP Mahila Morcha.

She contested the 2019 Harayana Assembly Elections from the Adampur Constituency but lost to Congress leader Kuldeep Bishnoi by a margin of 29,471 votes.

Sonali was in charge of BJP’s scheduled Tribe wing in Haryana, New Delhi, and Chandigarh.

She was married to Sanjay Phogat, a politician. Her husband, Sanjay, was found dead in 2016 at his farmhouse in Hisar. They both have a daughter named Yashodhra Phogat.

Sonali reportedly had an affair with her PA, Sudhir Sangwan and they both lived together in Gurugram.

Controversies

On the 8th of October 2019, during a rally in Balsamand Village in Hisar, Sonali asked the villagers to chant ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. She proceeded to call a group of villagers “Pakistanis” for not chanting ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. She was faced with huge criticism and backlash and later on apologized.

On the 5th of June 2020, Sonali had gone to see Sultan Singh, a member of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee, with a list of farmers’ complaints. A video later surfaced, showing Sonali slapping an official Singh with her slippers after he made some inappropriate comments.

Death

Sonali died on the 22nd of August 2022 in Goa and it was reported that she died of a heart attack.

On the 25th of August 2022, her autopsy report was released and it confirmed multiple injuries on her body which led to Sonali’s family claiming that she was raped by her two assistants before they poisoned and murdered her.
