Career

Uchenna had the burning desire to be a filmmaker from a very young age but as with many young and aspiring entrepreneurs in Nigeria, he was faced with the problem of access to capital.

At the time, he needed a sponsor so badly but the preaching and books of Bishop David Oyedepo kept him motivated during that time of difficulty. Uchenna had affluent family members, his sisters, Jennifer was married to the then Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar. He approached all the people in his life for financial assistance but they felt that he was too young to be requesting millions and thought it was a scam or a project that would eventually fail and lead to loss of capital.

He then resorted to writing to the man he held in high esteem, the founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo. He wrote to the pastor asking him to sponsor one of his movies and he got back the same letter that he sent with a response from Bishop Oyedepo that reads “not foreseeable” on it.

He kept the letter to date and out of anger and frustration, he vowed to never worship at his church again. At the time, Uchenna was living with his Uncle so the following Sunday he had no choice but to follow his uncle to church and he fellowshiped at Bishop Oyedepo’s church once again. During the service, a man shared a testimony, saying that he lost his job, came to church, and after service went to Papa (Oyedepo) to cry for help. He told Oyedepo he didn’t have food or transport to go back home. Oyedepo told him to trek home and gave him a book titled, Satan Get Lost, and after reading the book, the next chapter of his life was opened; he now has 20 people working for him.

He then proceeded to also read the book and that was the turning point for him. From the book, he saw the need to start where you are and with what you have and to align yourself to the business, possibly starting from the smallest unit in the business and this led to his decision to open a video shop where people can come to rent films.

In 2005, while in his shop, a man named Mr. Ikechukwu Elendu walked into his shop and he decided to hold a conversation with the man. He opened up to Mr. Ikechukwu Elendu, telling him about the movie he wanted to shoot and his need for financial support. Mr. Ikechuwku asked him how much it would cost to shoot the movie, and he told him N3 million, Mr. Ikechukwu then responded that he would be travelling to the U.S. and would be back in two weeks and when he returned, he would give him the money.

When Mr. Ikechukwu returned from the U.S., he visited Uchenna Mbunabo’s shop and told him that he would be traveling to the U.K. and instructed Uchenna to come to his house by 5 am the following day for the N3 million. He did as was instructed and when he arrived at the house and got in, Mr. Ikechukwu came out to his balcony, and before Uchenna could utter a word, he threw a bag of money at him, wished him luck, and told him he would be leaving for the airport right away.

He had no bank account and was very restless holding that amount of cash, he eventually hid the money under the staircase where he was living with my brother and kept the money there for a month. Uchenna eventually shot the movie and credited Mr. Ikechukwu Elendu as the executive producer of the movie and gave the movie to a marketer alongside the master copy and production pictures and the movie was released. Mr. Ikechukwu Elendu called from America and was glad to see his name mentioned in the movie as the executive producer. The marketer whom Uchenna handed the movie over to, ran away with all the money gotten from the movie and Uchenna was confused and frustrated.

When Mr. Ikechukwu returned from America, he visited his shop and Uchenna was afraid to speak to him as he didn’t know how to explain what happened to the proceeds from the movie. But Mr. Ikechukwu just congratulated him, and asked him of the movie’s progress but never asked him of the money. Even tho the money wasn’t requested, Uchenna told Mr. Ikechukwu that he would come to his house the next week to give him back the money. On getting to Mr. Ikechuwku’s house, he offered Mr. Ikechukwu wine and before he proceeded to explain what had happened to the money, Mr. Ikechukwu told him that he didn’t want the money back and that was a gift from him to start his business.

As he was about to leave the house, Mr. Ikechukwu said that as a producer, he wasn’t supposed to be moving about on foot and then he gifted Uchenna a car that he had bought for his wife which she never makes use of. Uchenna added his personal phone number to the movie he released with Mr. Ikechuwku’s fund and people from different parts of the world called and sent him money to make more movies and that was how his career kicked off.

Today, he is the CEO of One & Two Film Production and has since produced over 100 Nigerian movies.
