Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji who was professionally known as Oladips was a Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter.

He was born on the 24th of March, 1995 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, and died on the 14th of November, 2023, in Lagos state, Nigeria.

Education

Oladips graduated from the University of Jos where he obtained a degree in Economics.

Career

Oladips started pursuing a career in rap at the age of 16 in 2012 when he made a cover of the song ‘SUCCESSFUL’ by Drake and Trey Songz. Oladips started out as a text battler and was well-known amongst Facebook rap battlers. He took on Don Geo in one of the rap battles and even won.

Oladips breakthrough came when he participated in the contest “King is Here” by D’Banj and he won the contest.

His victory at the contest landed him a record contract from one of Nigeria’s biggest indigenous rappers at the time, Reminisce. Reminisce signed Oladips to Les Roses Rogues (LLR), where he got a shot at success and got to work with other big rappers in the country.

On the 1st of July, 2019, Oladips left the record label and released a diss track for his former record label boss. He went on to launch his own record label, The Disciples Music.

Controversies

On the 1st of July, 2019, Oladips unceremoniously left the record label ‘Les Roses Rogues (LLR)’ three years after he joined them. After leaving the label, the rapper granted City FM an interview where he said if there was one thing he would have done differently regarding his music career, that would be never to have signed a record deal.

He went on to release a diss track titled ‘Maybe’ where he called out his former record label boss, rapper Reminisce. He said his former record label boss took advantage of his zeal and his young nature. Oladips also accused his former record label of not holding up their own end of the bargain. He stated that the label failed to finance him after making promises in the beginning. Oladips also revealed in a diss track that he left the record label with only ₦23,000.

On the 30th of November, 2022, in an interview with 10Magazine, Nigerian singer Wizkid said rap is dead and boring.

He said

“I don’t listen to rap – that shit is boring to me. It’s dead now, it’s tired. These guys do the same shit, rap on the same beats, same flows”.

He continues

“No disrespect to nobody (laughs). I don’t have anything against rap or any other type of music. I have a lot of rappers as friends, like a lot. So I’m probably the wrong person to say this.”

His comment didn’t sit well with a lot of rappers and they quickly called his bluff online and Oladips was one of the rappers who didn’t like what Wizkid said.

Reacting to the statement, Oladips took to X formerly known as Twitter to post a diss track he made for the Afrobeat star.

In the 59-second short video, Oladips condemned Wizkid’s statement in totality and enjoined him to keep quiet if he doesn’t have anything motivating to say to rappers.

He also took a swipe at Wizkid for using the phrase “she tell me say” in most of his songs.

The lyrics of Oladips’s diss track reads in part, “She tell me say, Mr she tell me say wetin? Hip-Hop shekini? MR she tell me say woke up today and said hip-hop is dead. Torun bakun yin, baba Bolu, (If you are feeling sleepy, daddy Bolu) go back to bed.”

He also questioned Wizkid for not helping rappers but was instead criticizing them. ” When last did you help the rappers? Se e le da hun sha (Can you answer?).”

Not stopping there, Oladips also called out Wizkid over the whereabouts of his signee, ‘Terri’ in the music industry. “Person wey you sign nko? Oti Teri si (What about the person you signed? He has become a victim).”
