Phyno – Do I Lyrics Translation and Explanation

Penthauze Music boss, Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike who is professionally known as Phyno released the song ‘Do I’ back in August this year.

As you already know, Phyno is an Indigenous rapper and singer so his songs are mostly in Igbo Language with a little bit of English and also Nigerian pidgin.

His latest song ‘Do I’, just like almost all his songs, has a lot of Igbo Language in it and in this post, I’ll be translating the Igbo Lyrics in the English Language and also explaining it.

[Intro]
Mess up o, mess up

[Verse 1]

Touch down, Anya na aku
Nyem way ma’m banye nkwo

Anya na aku literally means eyes will be beating or eyes will be looking. In the verse 1, Phyno is saying when he touches down/ when he arrives, eyes will be looking.

Nyem way ma banye nkwo: means give me way/chance when I enter market.

Nkwo is one of the four Igbo market days and we have markets in various parts of Igbo land that are named after the four market days. So Phyno is saying when he enters the market, which would normally be crowded, he should be given chance/way.

The boy looking like a million Bucks
I gabazi nwoke billion van
Asa what’s the plan? uche gi odiya
Osi m way ga cholu ogbo yi
O ife k’anyi ga na ako? (gerrout)
Do I look like I give a f**k?

The boy looking like a million bucks: means the boy is looking like a million dollars.

I gabazi nwoke bullion van: it means the boy’s movement/swag is like a bullion van. Bullion van is used for transporting cash and it is normally loaded with enough cash and properly guarded with armed men. So he is likening his movement to that of a bullion van, meaning it is expensive, of high importance and value, with proper security also needed.

Asa what’s the plan? uche gi odiya?: Asa means babe or beautiful lady. Uche gi odiya means is your mind in it? Or it can also mean are you down for it? Suppose you and someone made a plan today to go and do something tomorrow, when the day to carry out the thing comes, one can ask another ‘Uche gi odiya?’ meaning are you down for it? Or is your mind in it?

Osi m way ga cholu ogbo yi: she showed me out or told me to go and that I should go and look for my mate.

O ife k’anyi ga na ako?: is this what we will be talking?

[Chorus]
Do i Look like i give a f**k – Do I
Do i Look like i give a f**k – Do I
Do i Look like i give a f**k – Do I
I don’t give a shot, Obata osu

I don’t give a shot, Obata osu: Obata osu literally means when he/she enters, it happens/pops. We all know that person whose presence lights up the place either because of their charisma or their wealth or influence in society, someone whose presence changes the mood of place and makes it come alive is referred to as ‘Obata Osu’.

[Verse 1]
Top Man ife na eme
No go put your hand ebe oku na agba
As u see me so, achoro m ima
Afulum shege, fa melum iwa

Top Man ife na eme: Top man things are happening

No go put your hand ebe oku na agba: Don’t go and put your hand where fire is burning

As u see me so, achoro m ima: as you see me, I don’t wanna know or I don’t care.

Afulum shege, fa melum iwa: I saw shege, they dealt with me or they did me dirty.

Shege means extreme and unpleasant situations or circumstances.

OG ga ekpu gi ula
Mmeka si nwoke ga echu gi ura
Mgbe odigi naka, okwa isi m una
Ima na aburo m onye okwu nuka
Kita nwoke buzikwa obata osu
Tinye isi na party gi osalu oku

OG ga ekpu gi ula: OG will slap you

Mmeka si nwoke ga echu gi ura: The boy’s doings will chase sleep away from you or give you sleepless night.

Mgbe odigi naka, okwa isi m una: it means when you were in possession (referring to money and the good things of life)/doing well or when you were in charge, you refused to help me right?

Ima na aburo m onye okwu nuka: you know that I’m not a trouble maker or you know that I don’t talk too much

Kita nwoke buzikwa obata osu: now the boy is a happening guy. Obata osu as I already explained in the chorus in the beginning, is one who changes the mood of a place when he/she arrives or the life of the party. So here Phyno is saying now he is that guy whose presence scatters the place.

Tinye isi na party gi osalu oku: it literally means enter your party and it catches fire or gets hot. Phyno is saying if he shows up at your party it gets lit, you know like the life of the party.

Make your mind dey ma ikoba onu
E bu m the light nwoke kwu na oku
Apasam ka agadi nwoke
Gbalo ogwu yi
And if you sleep ebulu egbe yi
O ife k’anyi ga na ako?

Make your mind dey ma ikoba onu: ikoba onu means to insult someone. Phyno is saying if you start trolling you will be put in your place or like dealt with.

E bu m the light nwoke kwu no oku: I carry the light, the boy shines like light.

Apasam ka agadi nwoke
Gbalo ogwu yi
And if you sleep ebulu egbe gi
O ife k’anyi ga na ako?
Do I look like I give a f**k

Apasam ka agadi nwoke: means I compose like an old or elderly person

Gbalu ogwu yi: stay your own

And if you sleep ebulu egbe gi: and if you sleep they will take your gun.

O ife k’anyi ga na ako?: Is this what we will be talking?

[Chorus/hook]

[Verse 3]

Bad Boy je jukwa ese (ifulu ya)
Bruce wayne ma benya ogbe (normal)
The boy looking like a million bucks (okwaya)
Mkpoye si nwoke moving train
Asa kpasa pu aru uche gi odiya
Osim way ga chalu ogbo yi
O ife k’anyi ga na ako

Bad Boy je jukwa ese: bad boy, go and ask around. Means he is a bad boy and you can go and ask about him.

Ifulu ya? Means do you see/did you see it or you see!

Bruce wayne ma benya ogbe. Bruce Wayne when I enter the street

Okwaya means “right?”

Mkpoye si nwoke moving train: the boy’s squad, moving train. He is likening his squad movement to that of a moving train.

Asa kpasa pu aru. uche gi odiya?: Means babe feel at home, is your mind in it?

Osim way ga chalu ogbo yi: she told me I should go and look for my mate.

O ife k’anyi ga na ako: is this what we will be talking?

Then chorus again.
